GhostBed Mattress Review: General Overview
Ghostbed has quickly became one of the most known names in the mattress space.
The company makes a wide variety of mattress models, including its own original model, the GhostBed Luxe, the GhostBed Flex, and the GhostBed 3D Matrix.
However, it all started with their first mattress, the GhostBed original mattress.
It contains gel memory foam, as well as synthetic latex and other components to keep it cool.
This is a good, budget-friendly mattress for most people, but it is going to work better for certain types of sleepers:

GhostBed Mattress Firmness and Feel
While reviewing a mattress, we usually start with its firmness and feel.
This gives us a good initial idea of who the mattress will be a good fit for.
If you want to know how firm the GhostBed mattress is and what it feels like, read on.
How Firm Is the GhostBed?
The GhostBed gets an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which means it’s firmer than average.
The firmness of the mattress can be attributed to the high-density support foam, which is designed to provide a stable sleeping surface that’s well-suited to back sleepers and stomach sleepers, in particular.
Sleeping on the GhostBed
For most back sleepers, the GhostBed will deliver just the right level of support, allowing hips to sink into the mattress without feeling like you’re bottoming out.
A few lighter-weight back sleepers will find this mattress too firm, but for the most part, the GhostBed is one of the best mattresses for back sleepers.
If you’re a stomach sleeper, you should also find the support you need under your hips.
If you are a side sleeper, this model may be too firm. We recommend the Ghostbed Luxe.
What Does the GhostBed Feel Like?
The balanced feel of traditional foam mattresses will make the GhostBed great for sleeping on.
This mattress is a good, comfortable choice for those who move a lot during the night. It responds well to movement and fits the contours of the body.
Average Weight Sleepers (130 lbs – 230 lbs)
For those who are at the low end of the weight range and sleep on their back, it’s possible that the GhostBed will feel a little bit too firm. Again, we enrourage you to check out the Ghostbed Luxe or the 3D Matrix.
Those who weigh around 230 lbs will find that it’s just the right balance of comfort and support.
The GhostBed should be supportive and comfortable for stomach sleepers in this weight range.
However, for average weight side sleepers, the GhostBed isn’t going to be the best match; it simply doesn’t have enough give to relieve pressure points. For average weight side sleepers, take a look at the Ghostbed Luxe.
Heavyweight Sleepers (>230 lbs)
Those who are more than 300 lbs should maybe consider a mattress that has been made with coils for added support, even though the GhostBed is quite comfortable.
The GhostBed should offer just the right level of firmness for stomach sleepers who weigh around 230 lbs. If you are closer to 300 lbs, you may want to look for a sturdier mattress.
The GhostBed is likely to be too firm for side sleepers in the heavier category. We recommend checking out the Ghostbed Flex if this is you.
Lightweight Sleepers (<130 lbs)
The GhostBed may feel too firm, so lightweight back and side sleepers need to be aware of that.
The shoulders and hips may be uncomfortable for those who prefer side sleeping. For those we recommend either the Ghostbed Flex or Ghostbed Luxe.
However, lightweight stomach sleepers should feel right at home on the GhostBed.
GhostBed Mattress Construction
You want to know exactly what’s inside this mattress before you buy it, so let’s take a peek underneath the cover. We’ll take a close look at each layer and see how it helps the overall performance of the GhostBed.
Cover
The cover of the GhostBed is made with a stretchy polyester material, which is very thin and breathable. It does a more than satisfactory job of keeping the mattress cool.
Comfort Layers
1.5″ of aerated latex foam is under the cover of the GhostBed.
You should note that this is a synthetic latex, so those looking for an all-natural or organic option may want to look elsewhere.
From a performance perspective, this latex does the trick: It is very responsive and it’s ventilation helps to keep you cool.
Under that, you’ll find the 2″ of gel memory foam that will keep your mattress comfortable throughout the night, and prevent you from sweating. This is also an excellent way to provide additional support to the top of the mattress.
Support Layer
The high density foam in the support foundation helps to keep the mattress firm and stable.
Mattress Height
The Ghostbed is 11″ tall in total.

GhostBed Mattress Performance
We explained what the GhostBed is made of and what it feels like, but the real test is how the mattress performs. How did the ghost bed do?
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The GhostBed team makes a big deal about how cool their mattress runs; and by and large, it lives up to the hype.
Ghostbed uses latex and gel in their mattresses, which are known for their cooling properties.
This mattress comes with some extra-added ventilation to help keep the sleeper cool during warmer nights.
Motion Transfer
The GhostBed has a lot of bounce to it, which is good for combination sleepers, but not so good for couples.
Sharing a mattress with someone else can disturb you throughout the night, as it doesn’t isolate motion very well.
If you are looking the best mattress for couples, we recommend the Ghostbed Luxe.
Edge Support
Excellent edge support can be found in the sturdy foam construction of the GhostBed.
As you sit at the corner or sleep at the edge of your mattress, you will feel stable and supported.
Durability
The mattress is constructed using high-quality materials.
It should hold up for seven to 10 years, and we consider it to be highly durable.
Off-Gassing
You can smell a faint chemical smell when you first unbox your Ghost Bed.
This may be off-putting, but we found that it dissipated within 48 hours. This is to be expected from a bed in a box mattress.
Noise
We were not able to notice any noise from the Ghostbed mattress.
Sex
It is really easy to move around on the GhostBed.
It’s an excellent mattress for sex as partners should have no trouble moving around.
Warranty
The GhostBed comes with a 101-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty, which should offer some confidence in your decision to buy the product.
Ghostbed Return Policy
The return of a GhostBed mattress is easy. It is a lot simpler than almost any other return you make.
The return process is broken down in a step-by-step fashion:
Step 1: Contact GhostBed
The first step to start a return is reaching out to GhostBed after day 30. Be sure to reach out to them before day 101, however. You can do that by following the below steps:
-
- Call them at 1-855-855-4499
- Email them at [email protected]
- Live chat at ghostbed.com
You will need to pull up the receipt or email with the order number to expedite the process.
Step 2: Complete the Requested Information
You might be asked to fill out a form or send pictures. The form helps them organize the return while the photos show that your mattress is still in good shape. It must be in good shape or the local charity won’t take it and GhostBed won’t refund your money.
To protect your new mattress from dust, mold, mildew and dirt, we recommend placing a waterproof mattress cover on it. You don’t want a spill to happen so you can’t return the mattress.
Step 3: Prepare for Mattress Pickup
GhostBed is a great company and they will work with you to schedule a pickup date and time. You won’t need to rebox your mattress, but you must prepare it for donation. Carry it to your front door and be home for the mattress pickup.
Step 4: Watch for Your Refund
After the mattress has been donated, you’ll be able to get a refund. You can expect to get your refund within 3 business days after mattress pickup. It will be returned to you in your original form of payment.
